Places to Visit Within 200 km of Bodrum: The Ring That Brings In Efes, Afrodisias and Pamukkale

Step out of Artemis Bodrum and draw a 200-kilometre arc on the map: exactly 56 places fall inside it. Two of them are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Efes and Afrodisias — and a third, Pamukkale, sits right on the edge. But let us be honest from the start: 200 km around Bodrum is not motorway. It winds around gulfs, climbs over mountains and asks for patience. This article will not tell you to set off after breakfast.

Where are we in the series?

This is the fifth ring in our distance-band travel series. In the previous four articles we started on the peninsula and widened out step by step:

The new ring: what lies between 150 and 200 km?

UNESCO World Heritage and the great ancient cities

These are the real reason for this band. Efes (180 km) and Afrodisias (170 km) are firmly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Efes in 2015, Afrodisias in 2017. Pamukkale & Hierapolis joined the list far earlier, in 1988, and at exactly 200 km it stands on the edge of this band. Do not think of these as sights you catch along the way; each one asks for a full day.

The Temple of Artemis, which gave our hotel its name, is right next to Efes (200 km). It was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world; today a single column stands. Let us be plain: at first sight it can disappoint. But once you know what that column stands in place of, you feel something hard to describe.

Nysa (175 km) is the band’s quiet surprise: a city built on both sides of a gorge and joined by an enormous ancient tunnel. The geographer Strabo studied here, and its library is among the best preserved in Anatolia.

Köyceğiz, Dalyan and the green of the delta

Dalyan, Kaunos & İztuzu (180 km) is the best-known name in this band: a channel winding through reed beds, the Kaunos royal tombs cut into the cliff, and İztuzu Beach where loggerhead turtles nest. An important correction: Kaunos is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 2014 it has been on Türkiye’s UNESCO Tentative List, which means it is an official candidate, not an inscribed site. This distinction is misreported constantly online.

Further up the same delta lies Lake Köyceğiz (165 km): a lake ringed by sweetgum forests that grow naturally nowhere else in the world, and connected to the sea by the Dalyan channel. The sulphurous Sultaniye hot springs are here too. Toparlar Waterfall and Yuvarlakçay (both 175 km) are Köyceğiz’s green interior, where icy water runs beneath century-old plane trees. Ekincik Bay (175 km) is the sea gate to Dalyan, and Sarıgerme (190 km) is a Blue Flag beach of shallow water and kilometres of sand.

Marmaris, Bozburun and Datça

Marmaris is close to Bodrum as the crow flies and long by road. Marmaris & Kızkumu (165 km): the old bazaar around the castle, and at Orhaniye that famous sand spit you walk out into the middle of the sea. Right beside it is the Marmaris National Park (170 km) — a vast green expanse where red pine and sweetgum forests come down to the coves.

The Datça Peninsula is a world of its own: Palamutbükü (170 km), with its long white shingle and deep blue water; and Knidos (190 km) at the very tip, an ancient harbour city where two seas meet. Praxiteles’ famous Aphrodite once stood here. Selimiye (185 km) and Turgut Waterfall (180 km) are the calm corners of the Bozburun side.

A warning: driving out to Knidos at the tip of Datça and back in a single day from Bodrum is not sensible. Taking the ferry to Datça (the seasonal Bodrum–Datça line) cuts the road journey dramatically; always confirm the timetable before you set off.

Right next to Efes

If you are going to Efes, two more stops fit into the same day. The House of the Virgin Mary (185 km) sits on Bülbül Mountain, a small stone chapel held sacred by both the Catholic and Orthodox worlds. Şirince (185 km) is the stone-house village in the hills above Selçuk — famous for its fruit wines and ideal for a long lunch.

Realistic routes: this band is not a day trip

We promised honesty: in a 200 km band, “out in the morning, back by evening” does not work for most of these places. Realistic suggestions:

• The Efes day (full day, very early start): leave around 06:30–07:00. Efes → Temple of Artemis → House of the Virgin Mary → a late lunch in Şirince → return. Roughly 400 km round trip and 5–6 hours behind the wheel. It is doable but tiring, and in summer there is no shade at Efes in the afternoon.
• Pamukkale (we recommend one night): the morning light on the travertines and the sheer scale of Hierapolis do not fit into a single afternoon. Stay a night on the Denizli side and drive back the next day.
• Afrodisias + Nysa (one night, or a very early start): both lie on the same inland Aegean route. Allow at least three hours for Afrodisias’ stadium and its school of marble sculpture.
• Dalyan–Köyceğiz (one night is ideal, a full day is possible): the channel boat, İztuzu and Sultaniye can be squeezed into one day, but that day will run to twelve hours.
• Datça–Knidos (one night, by ferry): do not attempt it by road in a single day.

Short notes

• UNESCO accuracy: the inscribed World Heritage Sites in this band are Efes (2015), Afrodisias (2017) and Pamukkale & Hierapolis (1988). Dalyan/Kaunos is on the Tentative List (2014) — a candidate, not inscribed.
• Fees: Afrodisias, Efes, Pamukkale, Nysa, Dalyan/Kaunos, Knidos, the House of the Virgin Mary and the Marmaris National Park charge admission. Köyceğiz, Toparlar, Yuvarlakçay, Palamutbükü, Sarıgerme, Selimiye, Şirince, Kızkumu, Turgut Waterfall, Ekincik and the Temple of Artemis are free. Current prices and opening hours change; check before you leave.
• Loggerhead turtles: İztuzu and Sarıgerme are nesting beaches. During the nesting season the beach is closed at night and rules apply to parasols and sunbeds on the sand. Follow the signs.
• Water and shade: at Afrodisias and Efes there is almost no shade. A hat and water are not optional.
