Bodrum Windmills

The 18th-century stone windmills lined along the ridge between Bodrum and Gümbet — famous for their sunset panorama over the town and two bays.

Along the crest of the hill that separates the bays of Bodrum and Gümbet stand the stone windmills whose silhouette has become one of the town's emblems. In use from the 18th century until around the 1970s, they were driven by the steady sea wind to grind the region's grain into flour; their cylindrical stone bodies and conical wooden roofs reflect the rural technology of their age.

After they fell out of use, some of the mills were left idle for a time and several have since been restored. Today the real reason to climb up here is the view: the ridge embraces Bodrum Castle and its harbour on one side and Gümbet Bay on the other, all at once. At sunset especially, as the Aegean turns to orange, it is one of Bodrum's favourite photo stops.

A short distance from our hotel, the windmills can be reached by car or on a pleasant walk; entry is free.
