At the westernmost tip of the Bodrum peninsula, Turgutreis takes its name from the great 16th-century Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis (Dragut), and the monument raised in his memory is the landmark of its seafront. But what truly makes the town famous is its west-facing position: each evening, as the sun sinks behind the silhouettes of the Greek islands, the sky turns into a canvas shifting from orange to purple. This view has earned Turgutreis its reputation as the best sunset spot on the Bodrum peninsula.

With its long shoreline, modern marina and seafront cafés that come alive in the cool of the evening, Turgutreis is ideal for enjoying the sea by day and an unrivalled sunset in the late afternoon. The large open-air market held on Tuesdays is also one of the area's most colourful shopping experiences.
