A Carian harbour city on the Güllük Gulf, once famed for its fish — an agora, theatre and walls right by the sea.

On a peninsula now embraced by the village of Kıyıkışlacık, north of the Güllük Gulf, Iasos was one of the most distinctive harbour cities of ancient Caria. Because it was so intertwined with the sea, its economy rested on fishing; ancient writers praised the fame of Iasos fish and the richness of its fishing grounds — a maritime culture reflected even on the city’s coins, which show a figure riding a dolphin.

Across the peninsula, the ancient theatre, agora, bouleuterion and Roman-era remains are scattered among pine trees and gulf views. Walls running down to the shore show how the city was defended from both land and sea, while harbour structures now partly underwater tell of how the coastline shifted over the centuries. The historic building on the village square, once used as a fish market, today serves as a small museum. Close to Milas and wrapped in a quiet village setting, Iasos is ideal for travellers seeking a genuine sense of discovery away from the crowds.
