Ancient name
Strobilos

On the shore between Akyarlar and Bağla, rising like an almost perfect pyramid from the flat land around it, Aspat Hill is one of the most recognisable silhouettes of the Bodrum peninsula. Known in antiquity as “Strobilos” (cone / pine cone), the hill has for thousands of years been a lookout and defensive point thanks to its position; on its summit and slopes are traces of a Byzantine-era castle, cisterns and church remains. The path to the top is short but rewarding: from above, a panorama of the Aegean, the coves and the Greek islands opposite opens out.

The Aspat Bay at the hill’s foot offers ideal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing with its long shallows and steady wind, making it a favourite of watersports enthusiasts. Archaeological excavations in the area are bringing the surrounding ancient settlement and farming culture to light. With its sea, wind, walking path and layers of history, Aspat is a special choice for those who want to spend a day immersed in nature, away from crowded beaches.
