Ancient Theatre of Bodrum

Carved into the hillside in the 4th century BC under King Mausolus — one of the oldest theatres in Anatolia. Today it hosts concerts and festivals.

Set into the Göktepe slope just north of Bodrum's town centre, the Ancient Theatre was built in the 4th century BC under Mausolus, satrap of Caria, and ranks among the oldest known theatres in Anatolia. Following the classic Greek-Roman hillside plan, later additions raised its capacity to around 13,000 spectators.

With its stage building (skene), semicircular tiers of seating (cavea) and orchestra, it preserves the essential elements of classical theatre architecture. Extensively restored in the 20th century, the theatre has been returned to its original purpose: through the summer it hosts concerts, festivals and performances.

Perched above the town and harbour, its tiers offer a combined view of Bodrum Castle and the deep blue of the Aegean — spectacular especially at sunset. A short distance from our hotel, this ancient site is an ideal stop for those seeking both history and a view.
