The finest way to truly feel Bodrum is to see it from the sea. The Blue Voyage tradition — boat journeys that stretch from cove to cove aboard traditional wooden gulets — carries the soul of Bodrum, and the name who began this tradition is Cevat Şakir, the "Halikarnas Balıkçısı" (the Fisherman of Halicarnassus).
Karaada: Hot Spring and Healing Mud
A classic stop on day-long boat tours, Karaada is the largest island in the gulf. It is famous for the hot spring water flowing out of a cave and for the yellow mud believed to be good for the skin; spreading the mud on, letting it dry in the sun and then diving into the clear sea is the island's classic ritual.
Akvaryum Koyu: The Address of Clarity
Taking its name from the aquarium-like clarity of its water, Akvaryum Koyu is a sheltered cove lying between Bitez and Ortakent. It is one of Bodrum's best-loved spots for snorkelling and watching the seabed.
Where Does It Begin?
Blue tour boats generally set out from Bodrum Marina and the surrounding coves. Day tours include lunch as well; most boats make swimming stops in several different coves. A comfortable swimsuit, sun cream and a towel — that is the only thing you need for a blue day.
